Nowadays, more and more merchants become aware of the importance of social media and the profit it can generate. Therefore, social media users are more familiar with the business presence of social media -- public Facebook profile, Twitter page and Youtube account of an individual, a brand, or a company.
For business entities or a celebrity, creating their page on various social media sites definitely enrich the ways for more effective and direct communication between the companies or individuals and the public. Social media monitoring is indispensable for more and more companies for them to know the public opinions. Not only social media professionals are hired to manage the social media accounts for the company, but some are even doing something like content scanning on social media. Once I was complaining on the Facebook by posting on my wall about a clothes by ***, and just two or three days later, customer service staff from *** talked to me on Facebook asking about my problem with their clothes! Social media sites of celebrities reduce the distance between them and their fans or general publics. Before there is little way to communicate with them other than reading their news on newspapers or writing letters to them (most likely get no response). But now, people are able to follow the person they are interested of what they did, are doing or will do, people are even able to show their support, ask questions and doubts, and get feedback!
On the other hand, with more people sponsored to be a representative -- who can be your friends, people might be enough of their social media feeds chocked up with posts which might be out of their interests or business. The result can be that people who tweet are unfollowed by their friends. What I think and suggest is that people should settle down the theme and goal before opening a social media account. Whether it will be an effective communication tool for business reason, or a reflection of one's professional life, or just a record of daily life for an individual. Doing this will make an appropriate role of you by using social media effectively.

Revolution Month for Social Media!
September is a month for another social media revolution. Facebook has updated to version 8, although I heard many people complaining about the new version of being too complicated to use, I have signed up for the developer of Facebook new timeline and I am quite enjoying it! Renren.com and Weibo have also offered new versions and the common feature of these updates, I can see, is that to make each site more integrated. Weibo used to be a miro-blog site, it still is right now, with more functions like online chatting, tagging friends while posting photos, sending pictures or links by private message, etc. It's been like a combination of Facebook and Twitter. Every social media site is becoming more synthesized, which makes it more convenient for the users.
Yesterday I watched the stream on Linkedin about President Obama addressing pulling people back to work. This trend is making itself more unique and powerful. Linkedin, as the biggest social media site for professional and career networking, offers a perfect platform for such topic. The stream was on Monday afternoon, so the address made available on Linkedin reaches very well the targeted audiences. Today I watched a video on Youku, which is the Chinese version of Youtube. This video is a short film as one part of a video program conducted by Youku, directed by an English teacher who newly became a director. This program is a campaign joined by many famous directors and artists. What I want to say is such form of art or communication is the result of social media. On one hand, people doing business have realized what social media can take, on the other hand, social media form of performance or programs are highly welcomed by the public because it's free and convenient! On this point, social media has created a win-win situation, and a good side of cyberspace that we should credit for.

Don't be too Addicted!
Brian Solis sparkled in his newest blog post The Human Cost of Social Connectivity, which basically points out privacy, time, emotion and fatigue as several human cost of social media.
I heard people complaining about their high exposure of life on social media, and I also heard people warning that be careful of what you put on social media because everyone can potentially see and use it. Privacy is indeed a long existing problem in social media utilization. However, social media is created based on the concept of sharing and interacting. Social media empowerment has no meaning without people using it. Privacy and exposure can be reached to a degree of balance, depending on how the users would like to see it as.
Involvement in social media can definitely lead to distraction and time consuming. Like Brian said in the post: "With one click, we can find ourselves hopelessly lost in a labyrinth of fascinating experiences that have nothing to do with our initial focus." Many companies set to block social media sites access within company Internet to avoid over spent time on social networking by employees during working hours. Actually this is a dilemma, for those companies who use social media as an indispensable tool of communication, it is impossible to block the site internally. Many young adults are so addicted to social media sites, even I suffer from being forced to open pages subconsciously. I was thinking of adding an Internet access controller app from the web browser to limit my time spent on certain sites, but finally I gave up because that would probably make myself even more struggling and suffering.
Brain conducted a survey which reveals that more people than expected are suffering from social media fatigue. Indeed, whether you wander around social media world or work diligently inside, you have to put emotions in it, and fatigue will be "an inevitable product of engagement." Such fatigue may compose a question of why we would like to engage in social media that much with more capitals it costs than actual benefit we obtain. What's more important, social media drives us to a society where we don't know the names of our neighbors, don't value a kiss or hug from family members...this is sad. Definitely we can, stay away from the computer and those fancy sites, embrace our love, friendship and nature, where we must feel a sense of refreshed, relaxed and reborn.

Reflection on Reading Kaplan and Haenlein
Andreas M. Kaplan and Michael Haenlein (2009) introduces in their article Users of the world, unite! The Challenges and opportunities of Social Media the magnificent emergence of social media, created a classification scheme by using as set of theories -- social presence/media richness and self-presentation/self-disclosure. The social media sites they researched on include Collaborative projects (Wikipedia), blogs, social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter), content communities (YouTube, Flicker), virtual social worlds (Second Life), and virtual game worlds (World of Warcraft). According to Kaplan and Haenlein, social media sites low in social presence/media richness require simple exchange among users while high in this terms involves much interactions and information exchange among users. For example, blogs, compared to Social networking sites and virtual social worlds, has the lowest social presence/media richness, but still requires higher self-presentation/self-disclosure.
I agree the five pieces of advice Kaplan and Haenlein offered about being social: "be active, be interesting, be humble, be unprofessional and be honest." "Social media allow firms to engage in timely and direct end-consumer contact at relatively low cost and higher levels of efficiency than can be achieved with more traditional communication tools." For a company who decide to start using social media as a new communication tool, they must use it strategically, which including carefully choose the site, pick the application (or make your own), ensure activity alignment, integrate media plan and make sure the access for all (Kaplan & Haenlein). On the other side, don't forget that social media is based on people-generated content. With social media, everyone is empowered to be a publisher, a reporter and a leader of certain information. Therefore, as a company communicating to the public, you must master the basic art of communication, know that it will be a two-way symmetric communication, and make sure you hold the appropriate attitude in using this tool, otherwise, social media may enlarge your mistake or even worsen a crisis if not used correctly.
With so much profit and non-profit benefits social media generated for either an individual or a company so far, the society will definitely march on with increasing implementation on social media. And I can predict there will be changes frequently in social media industry, that is the development in cyberspace, embrace the challenge and discover the world you might never know before.

Social Media Profile Has Replaced Yourself?
Social media is an amazing tool in changing the world, but however it changes the way that people communicate and live, do business or commerce, social media is initially aimed to represent individuals.
Nowadays, your Facebook profile or Twitter page may be prior to yourself to reach employer's office. It could be the substantial supplement to your resume, but could also overthrown employer's impression in just one minute. It's true that every Facebook page or Twitter page is a platform for an individual to express his/her mind and showcase life. But due to the overwhelming power that social media has obtained, any individual should consider more in using this tool.
Employers start to hire companies like Social Intelligence which basically run background check of people's Internet and social media history. With the report from social media background check companies, the employers may know much more than you've ever expected. Cases do exist that people flunked their social media sites, despite their biographical information, indication like personality, social responsibility, or other potential job qualifications can be found out by those companies or employers through photos, posts, video and comments on the Facebook or Twitter. Some candidates may complain about privacy offended and bottom line of this behavior, however it makes sense for either side. How can an employer have interest on a person with bottles of beer or a bunch of girls kissing and dancing in the photos on Facebook, even the resume describes him/herself as a well-behaved, positive and socially responsible person? A company would not like to hire anyone that may cause problems to the company. Whatever posted on social media sites could be reflection of an individual from your side and employers have no reason to disbelieve what they have seen. Therefore, be careful of what you post on your page, sometimes social media profile can replace yourself in the eyes of employers.

Social Media is the Solution
Social media is playing an uprising role in issues nationwide, and even global wide. The revolution in Egypt, the riots in London, etc. The title of this video is "Social Media isn't the Problem. It's the Solution." I totally agree with that. I saw an interesting video on Youtube today saying that social media could have prevented the terrorist attack on 9.11 ten years ago if it was used as widely as it is now. I cannot comment on how things would change the history because it's the past. However, I do identify that social media is able to spread out news that could have been hidden, to affect how things are progressing and even its results.
Social media is the solution when the public need to be informed by what they have the right to know, when social bias and injustice exist, when help is needed by all the society. Social media has exposed many scandals and negative facts, harmed the interest of certain people or group. However, it is on the way to reach the social fairness. Different from traditional media outlets, social media is not centralized, controlled, it is more decentralized and democratic, delivering people's voices, symbolizing the freedom of speech. Sensitive topics or words would be censored from traditional news outlets, but they would stay in hot discussions for quite a while on social media sites.
Social media could be used by negative will, false and misleading news are all over the world, so do on social media. Public especially teenagers are easily agitated by someone who hold evil wills operating the social media. Therefore, while praising highly the social media, people need to know how to face and use social media in reason. It is not the social media who speaks for social justice and democracy, but the people who use social media that contribute to social development in this new media era.

Li's Domestic Violence Crisis Exposed By His Wife's Micro-blog
A hot new topic appears on Weibo, the Chinese most popular micro-blog. Yang LI is the inventor of Crazy English, which promotes Li's method of practicing English by shouting out loud. His methods has gained a large amount of popularity, even attaining celebrity status, in China as well as other Asian countries.
Li is a legendary person, he has encouraged many people who are shy to speak English overcome their timidity and begin to talk in English. He has been an idol with symbol of boldness, patriotism, hope and love. However, micro-blog posts by his wife, an American lady named Kim, has turned over his image drastically.
Not many people know his wife, who is low-key in life. In the past two month, Kim posted a image with well on her head and posts like "It would be easier if love had just disappeared the minute that your hand struck my face, but it did not. Seeing that you were having make up applied for TV appearance while I was in hospital hurts more than your slamming my head on the floor." "You knocked me to the floor. You sat on my back. You choked my neck with both hands and slammed my head into the flloor. When I pried your hands from my neck you grabbed my hair and slammed my head into the floor ten more times!" "You are an educated person. You must recognize this behavior is not mentally sound. I must divorce you for the sake of our girls. I will never teach them to hate you, you are their father. I will teach them to hate your behavior." "LY, I promised to not post on my weibo until after you appeared at the police station this evening to face your charges. You failed to appear. My primary goal continues to get you the help that you need. A problem cannot be helped until you admit that you have one."
These posts have attracted many micro-bloggers - who are outrageous, thinking unbelievable. Many people also provide legal help for Kim. The latest post by Kim was "LY faced police charges, admitted the truth, accepted responsibility and asked forgiveness. With courage, love and faith in God, we will sort out the rest. My family needs to heal. Everlasting thanks for all support, understanding and love." Meanwhile, on Li's micro-blog, he admitted the fact and said he was under treatment by psychologist.
This is another case showing social media's overwhelming power. From social media a person is possible to lose all his/her reputation all in a night, from social media a person can seek for help much faster than from traditional media. Kim is not verified as "Li's wife" or something on Weibo, public knows her as Li's wife through their communication online. Now Li is facing a serious personal and career crisis as a social celebrity. Simply to say, he is a teacher, promoting his educational belief and methods in front of millions' students, how can people believe domestic violence is related to such a social responsible teacher? To Kim, she is so lucky that social media helped her get the sad news spread and provide as much help from the public. To the public, social media is like a magician, they will never know what they are gonna see or hear next, but oftentimes, social media is more honest than a magician, it reveals facts.

Social Media is Giving the Upper Hand to Transparency
Reading the Chapter 3: The Democratization of Everything and Chapter 4: Everyone is a Publisher, Everyone is a Broadcaster on Citizen Marketers leads me fall into deep thoughts on how social media has influenced the Wenzhou Train Crash Accident.
On 23 July, 2011, two high-speed trains traveling collided on a viaduct in the suburbs of Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. 40 people were killed, at least 192 were injured in this fatal crash. In the first minute after the horrific accident, it was not any reporter or rescuer who has released the news, they arrived within hours, it was the passengers on board that sent out and updated the shocking news with a lot of pictures on scene through their micro-blog and other social media outlets. Immediately the news spread out nationwide among Internet users and caught everyone's attention.
Later on, China Railways Department made several unacceptable orders during the rescue, like burying the four compartments which fell off the bridge without further rescue of passengers inside and any analysis afterwards. These exposures by people on the scene through social media immediately caused a huge stir among Chinese public. They require transparency and democracy during the whole rescuing process, they claimed all wrong decisions trying to avoid the sadly consequences must be stopped asap. All the voices on social media created an invisible power which attracted the attention of the central, arouse the sympathy and justice inside everyone. Afterwards, other media, including newspapers, TV channels, radios and even state-owned media outlets cannot stand for tolerance of the ignorance and disrespect of lives.Things changed. The buried trains were dig out, related departments are more cautious dealing with the compensation, Railway Departments made announcement promising they would investigate the real cause instead of the "Thunder attack" at first...Finally, the result of investigation showed there were problems existed in signal system as well as management process.
This accident should have been avoided, however, thanks to social media, the facts were not buried. Every passenger on board who released the news, and everyone using social media to spread out the news was a reporter, a publisher and a broadcaster. Social media did not only let people know the real facts, but gave an upper hand calling for the truth, justice and transparency which appeal to our hopes.

What's Good for Social Media Culture?
I wander around social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, Renren (Chinese version of FB), Weibo (Chinese version of Twitter), blogs, etc. almost everyday, feeling the unprecedented media impact from social media ever to our lives. Social media provides a brand new way of networking and living, offers a different platform for doing commerce and business. In addition, its power of changing the way the society develops is another fact that really matters.
Recently China has experienced many crises, I am talking about one of them in this post -- the crisis on China Red Cross Fund. The story stemmed from a Weibo page of a 20-year-old girl Meimei Guo. Weibo is the most popular Chinese micro-blog, similar with Twitter, it has a verification system which verifies the identification/position of an individual, if it's factual, the title will appear on the person's profile officially from Weibo instead of being edited by the person him/herself. This young lady got her title as "Manager of Commerce in China Red Cross Fund." However, it was her lavish lifestyle and the content of her micro-blog that attracted public's attention: She has a Maserati convertible, more than five Hermes handbags, lots of luxury possessions, access to many up-class events, and unperturbed attitude towards public's questions and critics.
Public is curious, eager to find out the story behind such a girl with so much unmatched to her age, and the most important, people need to figure out whether there is any corruption in China Red Cross, the biggest non-profit organizations in China. Public doubts about corruption in China Red Cross Fund has been out for a while. Therefore, research were done by millions of people, they communicate through Weibo, more people paying attention to this incident help spreading every news out by re-twitting. Despite that China Red Cross Fund had made several announcements claiming the Fund is out of business, people would rather digging deeper into the hole by themselves because many facts indicate there are problems exist. The stir was huge, even Meimei said she had never expected it to be such a social issue. Attention and communication among public through social media has turn this incident into public's distrust to non-profit organizations in China.
The issue has been on for more than three months and it will never end.Even though the public cannot reveal all secrets hidden behind, people empowered from social media are able to declare their right to know the truth, to investigate into a problem by themselves, and to reveal evils in society. As it turned out there are indeed corruption and many other management problems inside the China Red Cross Fund, the exposure of scandal will not only help to regulate the Red Cross Fund, but other non-profit organizations in China. Social Media has open a door of more freedom of expression and media monitoring.

Social Media Empowering
Web 2.0 makes it possible that everyone has a chance to make themselves heard and remembered. With a click of mouse or type from keyboard, one can be empowered to change the way the world changes. TIME's article Power To The People introduces many ordinary individuals doing extraordinary things made powerful by social media, I realize all around the world there are huge more than the sixteen persons who have changed or are dominating the trend in certain small portions of the world development by the help of social media.
These people can be talented in any area, like Harriet Klausner who has posted the most book reviews on Amazon.com than any others, or can be normal person like Megan Gill living normal life who gets attention simply by the use of Facebook. Like Ali Khurshid who makes people see Pakistan's real beauty through his eyes, many people who earn popularity through social media play a role as a representative, introducing people to what they want to see, what they want to hear and what they want to do. Therefore they build up an expectation among their audiences, as well as a model image. People get empowered by chance, by endeavor or by wisdom -- in strategically use of social media which has the power to change the world in current times.
The TIME article mentioned Wang Xiaofeng, who is named "Bart Simpson In Beijing." "Serious critiques of social problems or political leaders can still be dangerous in China, but serious isn't Wang's style." Indeed, he has his own humorous and non-mainstream way of satire, in art, culture, politics and life. In China, there is a figure, who has been an idol for more than ten years, not good at English, but good at using every word criticizing straightly, sharply and humorously. His name is Han Han, a professional race-car driver, best-selling author, singer, creator of Party and China's most popular blogger. His writing, is often rapier thrust with caustic remarks about the government, often lead to censorship of this books. However it doesn't impact his influence among people. Five years ago, he started his blog, right now he possibly has been one of the world's most popular bloggers. Though he puts much of his time doing what he loves -- rally racing, he's been active revealing social problems, corruptions, or inhumane activities by blogging.
Social Media provides a platform that people feel anchored, get connected, and communicate, from which a power stemmed that may lead to a change of the world. Despite the popularity and power an individual gets from social media, more meaning lies in that social media is a technique that may have overwhelming power over the world.

Welcome to my blog!
My name is Ying Peng, a master student majoring in Public Relations in University of Miami. I was born and raised in Sichuan Province, China. You might not have heard the place, it's the hometown of the panda bear, world-known Szechuan (Sichuan) cuisine, and many more attractive. You are very welcomed to my hometown and I believe it will be a wonderful experience!
I earned a Bachelor of Management in Public Administration in China Agricultural University in Beijing, China. Miami is my second lucky place, though I didn't even think about studying and living here one and half years ago. My interest in Communication motivates me in a pursuit of Public Relations education for my master's degree and educational background helps me place my thoughts on PR in public organizations, such as Non-profit organizations and government. My personal background makes me part of enrichment to the diversity in UM as well as PR industry in the US. Social Media, as a global trend of new media, gets super popular in China, people live on it and PR practitioners have started to utilize it strategically as an effective communication tool. Obviously interesting differences do exist between social media use here and there, which I will share with you in my future posts.
I am very glad that I finally started this blog, which is my first English blog writing about PR and Social Media. Actually I've been keeping blogging for five years, it is a Chinese blog on which I wrote about my life and random thoughts, very personal but of great fun. I LOVE to include pictures in my blog posts, like I often share with people my traveling experience with pictures I took at that place. Posts are usually bitter or sweet, but they are best written memories help me recall the time whenever I feel like to. This blog will be more professional or academic about PR and Social Media, you will find something great and worth chewing on. But I will share my life and easy thoughts with images as well because that's what I got used to, in case you get bored. :-)
I love fashion, music, pets, swimming, Chinese calligraphy, etc., add me to your friend on Facebook and follow me on Twitter @flyingpiggyl, hope you really enjoy it! Thanks!
